The Porsche 944 is a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports car produced from 1982 to 1991. Born from the 924 platform but substantially re-engineered, it featured a bespoke 2.5-litre inline-four engine developed in-house by Porsche — the first production four-cylinder to use a counter-rotating balance shaft system, giving it the smoothness of a six. The 1985 base model produced around 163 hp and offered near-50/50 weight distribution thanks to its transaxle layout. Wide, muscular haunches, a flush hatchback roofline and pop-up headlights gave it a distinctive silhouette. Often considered the 'entry-level Porsche done right,' the 944 is praised for its handling balance, everyday usability, and genuine sports-car feel at a fraction of 911 prices. Values have climbed steadily as the water-cooled front-engined Porsches gain collector appreciation.
