The W198 Gullwing, produced 1954–1957, was derived directly from the 1952 Le Mans-winning 300 SL racing car. Its iconic upward-hinged doors were necessitated by the high tubular spaceframe chassis. Powered by a fuel-injected 3.0-litre straight-six, it was the world's fastest production car of its era.
