The Jaguar XJ40 is the internal project code for the third-generation XJ series, produced from 1986 to 1994. It replaced the long-running Series III XJ6 and featured an all-new platform — Jaguar's first truly modern chassis in decades. Offered with a 3.2-litre or 4.0-litre AJ6 inline-six engine, the XJ40 blended traditional British luxury with improved engineering. It was sold as the XJ6 (and later Sovereign/Daimler variants) and was notable for its innovative digital instrument cluster, sophisticated ride quality, and distinctly angular late-1980s styling. Despite some early reliability issues, the XJ40 has matured into a respected classic, appreciated for its understated elegance and characterful drive.
