The BMW M5 (E39) is widely regarded as one of the greatest sports sedans ever built. Launched in 1998, it was powered by a 4.9-litre S62 V8 engine producing 400 hp, making it the most powerful naturally aspirated production car engine BMW had built at the time. With a 0–100 km/h sprint of around 5.3 seconds and a governed top speed of 250 km/h (with an alleged 302 km/h ungoverned), it combined genuine supercar performance with the refinement and practicality of a full-size executive saloon. Developed under the supervision of BMW M GmbH, the E39 M5 used individual throttle bodies, a 7,000 rpm redline, and a meticulous chassis tune that made it a favourite of automotive journalists worldwide — earning numerous 'Car of the Year' and 'Best Sports Saloon' accolades. Approximately 20,000 units were built between 1998 and 2003, sold globally but produced in Dingolfing, Germany.
