The W163 was Mercedes-Benz's first modern SUV, launched in 1997 and initially built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It introduced the ML nameplate, offering a unibody platform and standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Early build quality issues were addressed in the 2002 facelift.
