The Pontiac Fiero was America's first mass-produced mid-engine sports car, produced from 1984 to 1988. The 1987 model year brought significant improvements including a revised suspension (borrowed from the Corvette) and the introduction of the Formula and GT trims with the 2.8L V6 producing 140 hp. Despite early reliability issues — particularly engine fires in the 1984–1985 models — the final 1987–1988 Fieros are considered the best of the line, with a much-improved chassis and handling that finally matched its sporty looks. The car was controversially discontinued just as Pontiac had resolved its early problems, giving it a cult following among enthusiasts who appreciate its unique mid-engine layout and potential.
